A flawed approach
The investigation into teaching numbers at Napier University unearthed
some startling results, not least the response from the university.
To claim that Napier University looks to ‘comparator institutions’
in tracking their student/staff ratio underlines the flawed ideology
that is at the heart of this supposed academic institution. Make
no mistake: this university is not riding high in the league tables,
far from it. Therefore, to claim that our education is measured
in comparison to similar institutions proves that university management
appear short in ambition, and lacking in vision. Indeed, would the
decision of a ‘comparator institution’ to raise their
student/staff ratio prove justification for Napier University to
do likewise?
Squeezing as many students in as possible may prove desirable
to university management in the short term; but their policy will
be extremely detrimental to the all-round education and enlightenment
we, as students, should receive from attending this university.
