Two faintly camp over forty-somethings playing miserabilist acoustic pop. C'mon, what's not to like?

Actually, this project is currently "on hold", as we're both wildly popular with young attractive people, who will demand our time.

Flowers For Algernon

Flowers For Algernon at Cabaret Voltaire

An acoustic/electric band of varying numbers of members throughout it's erratic and colourful life. Formed in 2003 as a duo (Nelson & Jim), we expanded to a six-piece, before playing our last gig in January 2006.

I played acoustic and electric guitars, the occasional harmonica, and did a few backing vocals.

Here's what some people thought:

"One of the best folk-influenced pop bands in Edinburgh, if not all of Scotland" - Barry Gordon, Daily Record 13 January 2006
"A curious cross of folk and The Smiths, their 'New PC' EP is clever without being smug" - Rick Fulton, Daily Record 16 September 2005
"As good - if not better - than their peers Aberfeldy, their simple-to-follow folk-pop tunes come as a breath of fresh air to the Edinburgh music scene". Evening News, 2005

The Circus

The Circus playing in Gargunnock

The Circus was a jazz-inflected folk-pop band from c 2004 - 2007, with songs written by Nick Rowell. Dave Series provided the jazz guitar, I hit percussion, or honked on a harp.

One the most good-natured bands I've ever played in. Dave went on to playing professionally in jazz bands, Nick went on to do a PhD in astrophysics.

The Hairy Apes

A traditional four-piece guitar band, that traversed the terrain between "pop" and "heavy-ish" like a nimble young mountain goat.
