Nelson's Academic Career

Paper Published

Yes, it's true. I had a paper published. I was the first author, my co-authors were Alison Varey and Thomas Chesney of Napier University. What was it called? It was snappily entitled:

"An Investigation of Sociability Measurements in Online Communities".

What was it about? Here's the abstract:

This paper reports the results of an investigation into measurements of the sociability of online communities, in other words, how well they support social interaction. The results showed that sociability is best measured by a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches.

If you would care to know more, you can seek out the International Journal of Web Based Communities, Vol. 1, No. 4, 2005.

Honours Degree

I've got a BSc (Hons) in Multimedia Technology from Napier University, which I completed in June 2003.

I also received the University Medal for the top mark in my year. If you want, you can look at the front, or the back (hover over the bold words above to see what I mean).

We did a variety of interesting subjects, including:

  • Web Development Methods (which included accessability and usability)
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Multimedia Technology
  • Software Project Management
  • Network Computing
  • Java

HND Computer Studies

I completed the aforesaid HND at Napier University betwixt 1987-1989. Although, back then, it was still called Napier Polytechnic.

We did a variety of subjects, one of which was COBOL. My favourite topic was Programming Techniques, which was a general overview of non-language-specific methods.

Curiously, after completing my degree (above), my first IT job initially involved a lot of COBOL. After the Multimedia Degree, it was like going from the cutting edge of computing to the blunt handle of computing!

Bits and Pieces

What else? Well, I've also completed courses in:

  • Java
  • Perl
  • Javascript
  • HTML
  • MAGIC 8 & 9 (a 4GL used for Rapid Application Development)

MAGIC is a not especially popular 4GL language, so I wouldn't be too surprised if you've never heard of it.
